Issues emerging

Page history last edited by alessandra 1 yr ago

Through the consultation process the local organizers will hopefully bring feedback from the farmers into conference organizing. Possibe issues around which we can cluster stories are

  • Past and present agronomic practices
  • Changes in market opportunities
  • Change/loss of varieties
  • Change in living standards over time
  • Has PPB changed their knowledge, way of thinking, etc?
  • Bio-fuels
  • Food-prices

More suggested topics:

  • Use of crops as healthy foods
  • Impact of climate change
  • Performance of varieties
  • Major limiting factors for production (beyond varieties)
  • Institutional back-up/support

Topics suggested by the Egyptians:

  • Bedouin stories,
  • traditional and new technologies of agricultural practices,
  • change of varieties,
  • change of Bedouin sedentary and life,
  • PPB varieties and participatory of local communities in agricultural development projects.
  • old and present using of barley grain and developed varieties
  • Bedouin songs during harvest time of barley
  • proverbs related to rainfall precipitation and agricultural practices

Topics suggested by the Iranians:

  • why traditional/indigenous seeds are important: suitable for the environment and soil of Garmsar, better taste
  • what were some of the best traditonal varieties of Garmsar
  • why these seeds were lost: the rise of materialism and money, loss of farmer independence and unity
  • other major problems: privatisation of water, degrading soils, climate change, insurance, and lack of appropriate support from the government

On the last day, as a final topic:

  • Would farmers like to keep in touch and collaborate with other farmers. How?
